In depth · from Julia’s review

Capital One Venture: behind a 2% card at 1 cent a mile, ahead at 1.5 cents

For people who redeem at 1 cent, a no-fee 2% card is $95 ahead; Venture ends $105 ahead only if all miles reach 1.5 cents.

The short answer

Capital One Venture Rewards is a travel card that earns 2 miles per dollar on ordinary eligible purchases and charges a $95 annual fee. Against a no-fee 2% card it starts $95 behind when every mile is worth 1 cent, and it catches up only if the whole balance of miles averages about 1.24 cents.

Miles can cover eligible travel or transfer to participating loyalty programs. In Julia's example Venture ends $105 ahead at 1.5 cents, so how you use the miles changes the result, even with the same spending.

A no-fee 2% card gives more to someone who redeems every mile at 1 cent. The Studio's Wallet Score is 70 out of 100, and its verdict on fit is "Earning 2 miles per dollar on everyday purchases, with optional travel transfers." Its limitation: "It has no recurring 300-dollar travel credit. The welcome offer is excluded from the score."

What it costs

The annual fee is $95 and recurs every year, and the Studio's rate card lists no membership cost beyond it. Julia works out the ongoing years first. Any welcome offer gets a separate first-year calculation.

The comparison is a no-fee 2% card. Flat-rate options exist without annual fees or foreign transaction fees. Fidelity Rewards Visa, for example, currently gives 2% when rewards go into an eligible Fidelity account, though its account and redemption requirements need to suit you. Julia includes cash-back cards that work abroad without that extra fee, so Venture gets a fair comparison.

What it earns

  • 2 miles per dollar on ordinary eligible purchases.
  • 5 miles per dollar on eligible hotels, vacation rentals and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel.

Julia values miles at 1 cent each toward eligible travel. You can cover a paid travel purchase with miles within 90 days: pay with the card, then use the redemption option, with no need to hunt for an airline award seat. Cash, merchandise and other redemption options may differ, so the value shown before confirming is the one to check.

Transfers are the other route. A 1-to-1 transfer turns 40,000 Capital One miles into 40,000 partner miles, while other partners can have different ratios. The ratio is part of the cost.

The credits, used honestly

Venture has no recurring travel credit, so nothing comes back against the fee each year. Three nearby items are easy to mistake for one.

  • The current welcome offer includes a one-time Capital One Travel stays credit with a first-year deadline, plus a bonus after qualifying spending. That is different from the recurring annual portal credit on Venture X, and a welcome bonus does not pay next year's fee.
  • The eligible trusted-traveler application benefit is periodic, not annual.
  • Ordinary Venture is not a full lounge-membership card.

Julia keeps the fee and the benefits together when comparing, and she does not carry a first-year offer into every future year.

The catch

Transfers need checking before anything moves. Confirm seats, taxes, surcharges, the transfer ratio and change rules first. Completed transfers generally cannot be reversed back into Capital One miles, and a balance in the wrong loyalty program leaves you fewer options than miles you have not transferred yet.

A long partner list is not a list of seats. The partner has to be able to book the flight, and for several tickets on the same departure, Julia would search for the whole family before moving miles. Finding 1 seat does not settle a family trip.

A transfer also adds work. Covering a paid travel purchase is a clear route to using the rewards, while a transfer might save more but brings another program's booking and cancellation rules. A high value from a few miles does not mean the whole balance earns the same value.

The portal's higher rate helps only alongside a competitive booking price, so match the room or vehicle, the complete price and the cancellation terms before comparing. The Studio's result uses the current World Elite Mastercard version and its documented protections, so check the benefit guide for a different version.

Who it fits

Venture fits someone who prices a flight or hotel each time, will do the research when a transfer saves a lot, and can reach about 1.24 cents per mile across the whole balance. Julia also names two other cases where it can make sense: the qualifying first-year offer fits, or the travel features cover the recurring cost.

It fits less well for someone who consistently redeems at 1 cent and wants a simple flat reward, since a suitable no-fee 2% card comes out $95 ahead. For her family, Julia says, Venture would need to make the travel they already want more worthwhile. She refreshes the cash price and keeps both choices open until she knows which works better.

The arithmetic

Julia puts $20,000 of planned purchases on Venture over a year and pays in full.

  • Everyday spending: 2 miles per dollar earns 40,000 miles. At 1 cent they are worth $400, and after the $95 fee that leaves $305. A no-fee 2% card earns $400 on the same purchases, so Venture starts $95 behind.
  • Catching up: after the fee, the 40,000 miles need $495 of net value, about 1.24 cents per mile, after award charges and rewards given up. At 1.5 cents the miles are worth $600, or $505 after the fee, which is $105 ahead of the 2% card.
  • A $320 flight: the award needs 30,000 miles plus $80. The paid ticket costs $313.60 after 2% cash back, and the award still needs $80, so the miles save $233.60, about 0.78 cents each. Covering the cash fare at 1 cent per mile is the better route here.
  • A $580 flight: the same award saves $500, because it still needs $80 in cash, about 1.67 cents per mile. After 2% cash back the paid ticket's net cost is $568.40, so the miles save $488.40, about 1.63 cents per mile. The award did not improve; the comparison changed.
  • A hotel: the same refundable stay costs $360 direct or $380 in the portal. At 5 miles per dollar and 1 cent per mile, portal rewards are worth $19, so the net cost is $361. Booking direct with 2% back costs $352.80, so the portal costs $8.20 more.

A paid ticket might also earn flight miles or status credit, which is worth including if it matters to you.
