Citi Strata Premier or Capital One Venture: which $95 travel card fits your spending?

Both cards charge $95. Strata Premier suits food, gas and a planned hotel stay; Venture suits flat earning, and only pays off if you redeem well.

Citi Strata Premier or Capital One Venture: which $95 travel card fits your spending?

The short answer

Citi Strata Premier and Capital One Venture Rewards both charge a $95 annual fee, and neither beats a no-fee 2 percent card unless you redeem the points well. Strata Premier suits you if restaurants, supermarkets, gas and travel make up most of your spending. Venture suits you if you want 2 miles on everything and reliably redeem them at about 1.24 cents each or more.

Julia's Wallet Score puts them almost level: Citi Strata Premier scores 71 out of 100 and Capital One Venture Rewards scores 70. The score weighs value after costs across 3 household budgets, then how easily the rewards can be used, the effort involved and 2 protections. The one-point gap tells you less than your own spending and your own redemption screen do.

Side by side

  • Annual fee: $95 on both cards.
  • Strata Premier earning: 3 points per dollar on restaurants, supermarkets, gas and EV charging, air travel and other hotel purchases. Eligible hotels, rental cars and attractions through Citi Travel earn 10 points per dollar. Everything else earns 1 point.
  • Venture earning: 2 miles per dollar on ordinary eligible purchases. Booking a stay or a rental car through Capital One Travel earns 5 miles per dollar.
  • Standout benefit: Strata Premier takes $100 off one qualifying Citi Travel hotel stay per calendar year. The stay must cost at least $500 before taxes and fees. Venture lets you cover an eligible travel purchase with miles within 90 days, so you don't have to find an award seat.
  • Fit: Strata Premier suits a diverse food and travel budget plus a planned qualifying hotel stay. Venture suits everyday spending at 2 miles per dollar, with optional transfers.
  • Main limit: Strata Premier's cash redemption varies by account, and its portal route and $500 hotel threshold matter. Venture has no recurring $300 travel credit, and its welcome offer is excluded from the score.

Julia's examples for the two cards use different budgets, so don't set one total against the other. Each is compared with a no-fee flat card on its own budget.

Is the Strata Premier fee worth it?

In Julia's family example, spending is $5,000 at restaurants, $7,000 at qualifying supermarkets, $2,400 on gas and $3,000 on flights and hotels earning 3 points. That is $17,400, which earns 52,200 Citi Strata Premier points. The same $17,400 on a no-fee 2 percent card earns $348. That is the figure Strata Premier has to beat.

The answer turns on the redemption:

  • At 0.75 cent per point ($75 for 10,000 points), the 52,200 points return $391.50. After the $95 fee, $296.50 remains, which is $51.50 behind the flat card.
  • At 1 cent per point ($100 for 10,000 points), the points are worth $522, or $427 after the fee. Citi Strata Premier then leads the flat card by $79.

The purchases and points are identical in both cases; only the redemption differs. Look at the offer your own account shows before you count on either figure.

A food-focused no-fee card can also beat it. If your restaurants and supermarkets, $12,000 together, qualify for Savor at 3 percent, that earns $360. Gas and travel on a 2 percent fallback add $108, so the pair earns $468. Against that, Strata Premier's $427 after the fee loses by $41. A comparison with only one flat card would miss that.

When do Citi transfers change the answer?

Transfers can lift Strata Premier well above those figures. If the points replaced $783 of travel expense after unavoidable award charges, you would get 1.5 cents per point. After the fee, that is $688 of value, which is $340 above the flat card and $220 above the Savor pair.

That value needs a booking you can actually make. Citi's partners include American Airlines, JetBlue, Virgin Atlantic, Cathay, EVA Air and Choice Hotels, among others. Each has its own transfer ratio and booking rules, and a partner name doesn't guarantee your flight. Search for the award first, compare it with a cash itinerary you'd really buy, subtract the award's taxes and fees, and divide the saving by the bank points required.

Does the Citi hotel discount actually save money?

Only if you'd book that stay anyway. Suppose a hotel costs $520 through Citi Travel and $470 directly. After the $100 reduction, Citi's subtotal is $420. With identical taxes and fees, you save $50 against booking direct, before rewards and hotel-loyalty differences. Several smaller stays don't combine to reach the $500 threshold.

If the matching direct room were $420, the whole $100 benefit would only bring the prices level. Julia counts the $50 saving, not the full $100, and wouldn't raise a trip budget just to use the benefit. Compare the same room and booking terms, since the portal can change cancellation handling and loyalty benefits.

Citi Strata Premier has no foreign transaction fee and lists protections for qualifying cancellation or interruption, delays, luggage and rentals. Reimbursement comes only after an eligible, approved claim, and rental damage protection isn't blanket liability insurance.

Is the Capital One Venture fee worth it?

On a different budget, Julia puts $20,000 of purchases on Capital One Venture Rewards over a year, paid in full. That earns 40,000 miles. Redeemed at 1 cent toward eligible travel, they are worth $400, or $305 after the fee. A no-fee 2 percent card earns $400 on the same purchases, so Venture starts $95 behind.

To catch up after the fee, the 40,000 miles need to provide $495 of net value. That is about 1.24 cents per mile, after award charges and rewards given up. If all 40,000 miles redeem at 1.5 cents, they are worth $600, or $505 after the fee. Venture is then $105 ahead of the flat card.

Does transferring Venture miles beat covering a purchase?

It depends on the fare. The same award costs 30,000 miles plus $80, at a 1-to-1 transfer:

  • Against a $320 cash ticket: paying cash with 2 percent back costs $313.60. The miles then save $233.60, about 0.78 cent each. Covering a travel purchase at 1 cent is better.
  • Against a $580 cash ticket: the miles save $500, about 1.67 cents each. After the 2 percent back you'd give up, the ticket's net cost is $568.40, and the miles save $488.40, about 1.63 cents each.

The award didn't improve; the comparison changed. Check seats for your whole party before moving miles, because completed transfers generally can't be reversed.

The portal needs the same test. A refundable stay costs $360 direct or $380 through Capital One Travel. The portal's 5 miles per dollar are worth $19 at 1 cent each, so its net cost is $361. Booking direct with 2 percent cash back costs $352.80. The portal costs $8.20 more, so Julia would book direct.

Which card fits which habit?

  • Citi Strata Premier fits a household whose restaurant, supermarket, gas and travel spending is large, that has a qualifying hotel stay planned, and whose account shows a redemption near 1 cent or a transfer worth using.
  • Capital One Venture fits someone who wants a flat 2 miles on everything and reliably finds redemptions worth about 1.24 cents per mile or more.
  • A no-fee card fits if you'd redeem at 1 cent or less and want simplicity. A suitable no-fee 2 percent card deserves a look.

Before you apply

Terms checked October 6, 2026. Confirm each of these on the issuer's page before you apply:

  • The annual fee, earning rates and the redemption value your own account shows.
  • For Citi Strata Premier, the $500 hotel threshold, the Citi Travel booking requirement and whether a welcome offer applies. Citi's current page says the new-account bonus is unavailable if you currently have or previously had Citi Premier or Strata Premier, and other account-history factors can matter too.
  • For Capital One Venture, the transfer partners and ratios, and which version of the card you'd get. A first-year stays credit and a bonus after qualifying spending don't pay next year's fee.

Terms and transfer ratios can move, so refresh the cash price and the award before every transfer.
